Asian Americans
or Asian population in North America? There is a dilemma in deciding the
term. Although it should be the same ethnic group that marketers are
talking about and eyeing at, it is still hard to define the scope.
Americans with Asian origins are at the core of this ethnic group, but
Asian immigrants holding H-1B visa and towards citizenship are growing
constantly. Not to mention Asian tourists and students who compose a
large temporary population with huge buying power.
Asian Americans are generally though culturally complex and hard to
reach. China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia,
Cambodia, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, this is the most diverse ethic
group with huge consumer power. From U.S. 2000 Census, we know that the
have the fastest population growth rate of all racial groups, the
highest median household income, and very high rates of business
ownership. And they are trendsetters in many aspects, including food,
healthcare, recreation, education, and cutting-edge, high-tech
entertainment, etc.
According to U.S. Census Bureau's 2002 Survey of Business Owners (SBO),
there were 1.1 million Asian-owned businesses in 2002, showing a 24
percent increase from 1997. Their revenue totaled to $343 billion, a 13
percent rise from 1997. Asian-owned firms accounted for 45 percent of
businesses in Hawaii, 13 percent of firms in California, and 9 percent
in New York. AND IT’S SEVENE YEARS AGO! Entering 2009, what amazing
surprises could Asian consumers bring to the current depressing market? |
